Alicante City Center: the Most Practical Option
The city center works particularly well for a first stay. Much of Alicante’s everyday life is concentrated here: terraces, shops, restaurants, and streets that remain lively long after the beach day is over.
It also allows you to explore much of the city on foot. From many central streets, it is easy to walk to the port, the Explanada, the old town, and Postiguet Beach.
It is a good choice for couples, travelers without a car, short breaks, and anyone who wants to combine beach time with city life.
Its main drawback is precisely its liveliness. Some streets can be busy and noisy, especially around restaurant and nightlife areas. If sleeping well matters more than having bars just a few steps away, it is worth choosing the exact street carefully rather than simply searching for “Alicante city center.”
Postiguet Beach: Stay Close to the Mediterranean
Postiguet has one major advantage that is hard to argue with: you can leave your accommodation and be almost immediately by the sea.
In the morning, sunlight falls across the bay while Santa Bárbara Castle rises above the city. It is one of those views that instantly captures Alicante’s Mediterranean character.
Staying nearby is particularly appealing for travelers who want both the beach and the city center without relying too much on transport.
However, there is another side to this location. It is one of Alicante’s best-known areas, and during peak periods it can feel crowded. Anyone imagining a quiet, secluded beach will probably be happier elsewhere along the coast.
Old Town and Santa Cruz: Alicante at Its Most Characterful
At the foot of the castle, a different side of Alicante emerges. Narrow streets, pale façades, stairways, small squares, and corners where the Mediterranean suddenly appears between the buildings.
Santa Cruz has an especially photogenic atmosphere and offers a strong sense of the city’s historic side.
But beauty and convenience do not always go hand in hand.
The slopes and stairways can be awkward with luggage, strollers, or mobility issues. In addition, some streets in the old town have an active nightlife scene. A beautiful accommodation can turn out to be a poor choice if it is directly above a lively bar area.
This is an especially appealing option for couples and travelers who value atmosphere, architecture, and being able to go out on foot in the evening.
San Juan Beach: Better for a Beach Holiday
San Juan changes the pace.
Here the horizon opens up and the beach becomes much more central to the experience. The atmosphere is less monumental and more holiday-oriented: sand, seafront walks, apartments, and days that can pass without needing to head into the city center all the time.
It can be an excellent base for families, longer stays, and travelers whose main priority is the beach.
The trade-off is obvious: you are not in the historic heart of Alicante. If you want to move constantly between museums, the old town, central restaurants, and the beach, you will need to factor in travel time.
For a weekend mainly focused on discovering the city, I would personally choose somewhere more central. For several summer days with children and plenty of beach time, San Juan becomes far more appealing.
La Albufereta: Peace and Quiet Between Beach and City
La Albufereta is an interesting alternative for travelers who do not need to stay right in the middle of the action.
It has a more residential feel and gives you easy access to the sea without necessarily placing you in the busiest streets of the city center. It can work well for couples looking for a quieter stay, families, and travelers who prefer returning to a more relaxed area in the evening.
The sacrifice is spontaneity. From a central accommodation, you can head out after dinner and simply wander through the streets. From areas farther away, you need to think a little more about getting around.
Are There Any Areas to Avoid in Alicante?
Rather than identifying entire neighborhoods as places to avoid, it makes more sense to look closely at the exact location of your accommodation.
In Alicante, a few hundred meters can make a noticeable difference to your experience. Before booking, check whether the hotel or apartment is close to nightlife streets, whether there are steep slopes nearby, how long it actually takes to walk to the beach, and what transport connections are available to the places you want to visit.
It is also worth being cautious with phrases such as “close to the center” or “a few minutes from the beach” without checking the map. In tourism, advertised distances often sound much better than the same distances feel when you are dragging a suitcase through the August heat.
Do You Need a Car When Staying in Alicante?
If your main goal is to explore Alicante itself, a car is usually not essential. A well-located accommodation allows you to do many things on foot and use public transport for the rest.
In fact, staying right in the city center with a car can create parking concerns that travelers without a vehicle simply do not have.
The situation changes if you plan to use Alicante as a base for exploring other parts of the province. In that case, having a car can give you much more freedom, especially for itineraries with several stops.
For that reason, I would not choose accommodation and car rental separately. If you are hiring a vehicle, it is worth checking parking arrangements before booking your room.
Where to Stay in Alicante with Children
For families mainly looking for the sea and relaxed days, San Juan Beach usually works better than the livelier streets of the old town.
For a short stay that also includes sightseeing, centrally located accommodation away from nightlife can be more practical.
Santa Cruz has plenty of charm, but its steep streets mean it is not automatically the best option for families with small children and a stroller.
Where to Stay in Alicante as a Couple
A couple visiting Alicante for two or three days will probably get the most out of staying in the city center, the old town, or around Postiguet Beach.
Being able to walk to the sea in the morning, return to the hotel, have dinner in the center, and continue the evening without relying on a car offers a sense of freedom that is especially valuable on a short break.
For a quieter, more romantic stay centered on the Mediterranean, San Juan or La Albufereta may be more suitable.
Which Area Should You Choose for Each Type of Trip?
First time in Alicante: city center.
Weekend break: city center or Postiguet.
Couples’ trip: city center, old town, or Postiguet.
Family beach holiday: San Juan Beach.
Quiet trip: La Albufereta.
Historic atmosphere: Santa Cruz and the old town.
Travelers without a car: city center and well-connected areas close to the urban core.
So, Where Is It Worth Staying?
Alicante rewards a simple approach: do not look for the supposedly best neighborhood, but for the one that best suits the way you want to travel.
The city center offers convenience and urban life. Postiguet brings the Mediterranean closer without giving up too much of the city. Santa Cruz adds character in exchange for slopes and possible noise. San Juan offers space and beach while sacrificing proximity to the historic center. La Albufereta slows the pace and works better for travelers who do not need everything right outside their door.
And that balance matters especially in Alicante. Here, accommodation is not simply the place you return to at night: it determines whether your days begin among historic streets, terraces slowly coming to life, or with Mediterranean light streaming in from the coast.
Choosing well means deciding which version of Alicante you want to discover when you open the door each morning.
