Best time to visit Cancún: December to April
If enjoying the beach is your absolute priority, this is usually the safest bet.
A Caribbean winter has little in common with a European one. Temperatures remain warm, but the weather generally feels less oppressive than in summer. The Mexican Caribbean tourism board puts the annual average temperature at around 26°C and notes that the rainy season is mainly concentrated between May and October.

January and February in particular can show Cancún at its best: clear mornings, a breeze coming off the Caribbean, and evenings when dining outdoors no longer feels like an endurance test against the humidity.
What is the downside?
A lot of people are looking for exactly the same thing.
Christmas, New Year, and certain holiday periods can mean fuller hotels, busier beaches, and higher prices. March can also feel considerably livelier because of trips by North American students.
For that reason, January and February are among the best months to visit Cancún and usually offer an excellent balance between weather and overall experience, provided your budget allows for high-season prices.
March and April: plenty of sunshine, but choose your dates carefully
Early spring remains very appealing. Temperatures gradually rise, while the most humid part of the year has not yet fully arrived.
It is a good option for anyone looking for genuine beach weather who does not mind sharing the destination with more visitors.
However, there are two periods worth keeping in mind: spring break, which is especially noticeable at certain hotels and nightlife areas, and Holy Week, when domestic tourism also increases.
That does not make Cancún impossible to enjoy, but the atmosphere of your trip can be completely different depending on the hotel and your exact dates. A couple looking for peace and quiet by the sea will probably choose differently from a group of friends interested in nightlife.
May and June: better deals, more heat, rain and sargassum
May marks a transition.
Temperatures rise, the humidity becomes more noticeable, and rainfall becomes more frequent. Visit Mexico describes Cancún as a warm and humid destination for most of the year, with occasional rainfall particularly between June and October.

The upside is that better accommodation deals may start to appear compared with the core winter months.
It is an interesting time for travelers who prioritize budget and are willing to accept a certain degree of uncertainty in the weather.
Another factor also starts to become more important: sargassum.
Authorities in Quintana Roo and the Mexican Navy generally place Cancún's main sargassum season between roughly April and October. Its intensity varies enormously from one beach to another and from one day to the next, so traveling during these months does not necessarily mean finding a coastline covered in seaweed.

Even so, anyone specifically dreaming of turquoise water and completely clean sand should keep it in mind.
July and August: Cancún in full tropical mode
In summer, the scenery remains lush, but the weather is more demanding.
Expect plenty of heat, high humidity, and the possibility of heavy showers. That does not necessarily mean entire days of rain: in a tropical climate, an intense storm can pass through before the sun returns.
The problem is that archaeological excursions, long walks, and almost any activity away from the water can feel quite exhausting around midday.
School holidays also maintain a certain level of family demand, so summer does not always mean empty resorts or exceptionally low prices.
It is a reasonable time to visit if your dates are dictated by the calendar, but it would not be my first choice for discovering Cancún if I had complete flexibility.
September and October: lower crowds, attractive prices and more uncertainty
These months can offer a much less crowded Cancún and, depending on the hotel, attractive prices.
But the price of that extra peace and quiet is the weather.
Cancún hurricane season falls within the official Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30. Historical activity peaks around September, with a significant share of storms occurring between mid-August and mid-October.

That does not mean a hurricane will occur during your vacation. Most trips pass without encountering one. It simply means there is greater weather uncertainty, so it is wise to book flexible conditions and check forecasts before traveling.
For a honeymoon or an expensive vacation planned many months in advance, I would probably choose different dates.
For a flexible traveler who is comfortable changing plans, September or October can offer another advantage: fewer tourists, potentially lower prices, and a more relaxed atmosphere.

November: a strong balance of weather, atmosphere and value
November deserves particular attention.
Rainfall starts to decrease, the heat generally becomes easier to handle, and the busy winter season has not yet reached full intensity, especially during the first half of the month.
It officially remains within hurricane season until the end of the month, so the weather risk does not suddenly disappear.

Even so, the second half of November can offer a very attractive balance of weather, atmosphere, and occupancy, depending on the year and the holiday calendar.
Which month is best for a trip to Cancún?
If I could choose freely, February would be one of my top options. Temperatures are pleasant, humidity is lower than in summer, and conditions are good for combining beach time with excursions.
January would be almost as good, ideally avoiding the dates immediately after New Year.
For a balance between weather and budget, I would look at late November or selected weeks in April and May, always checking how they coincide with public holidays and school breaks.
And if price were the absolute priority, I would consider September and October, but only if I were comfortable with the possibility of the weather disrupting my plans.
The best time to visit Cancún for different types of traveler
For beaches and good weather: January and February.
For couples: January, February, or late November, avoiding the busiest holiday periods.
For families with children: winter and early spring are generally more comfortable in terms of temperature and humidity.
For spending less: certain periods between May and autumn can offer better value, in exchange for rain, humidity, and greater uncertainty.
To reduce the chances of encountering sargassum: winter generally offers better odds, although no natural phenomenon can ever be guaranteed.
To avoid crowds: try to stay away from Christmas, New Year, Holy Week, and other major holiday periods.
Is there a time of year you should avoid completely?
Not necessarily.
Cancún welcomes travelers throughout the year because even the rainy season includes plenty of sunny spells. But that does not mean every month offers the same experience.
Anyone who has spent months saving while imagining clear seas, long beach days, and blue skies should prioritize winter, even if it costs a little more.
Anyone who simply wants to relax at a good resort, enjoy the pools and restaurants, and take a few excursions may find it much easier to accept the imperfections of summer or autumn.
That is the real answer: the best time to visit Cancún is not simply the period with the best weather, but the one whose drawbacks best fit the way you like to travel.
