Gold Coast travel budget: how much money do you need?

A Gold Coast travel budget can look surprisingly reasonable until accommodation, theme parks, restaurants and nightlife begin to add up. The good news is that beaches, ocean views and some of the coast’s best walks are completely free.

How to plan your Gold Coast travel budget

Your Gold Coast travel budget depends heavily on where you stay and how many paid attractions you want to include. Beaches, ocean swims and many scenic walks cost nothing, while beachfront accommodation, frequent restaurant meals and theme parks can quickly push your Gold Coast trip cost much higher.

  • A tight-budget traveller can get by on around A$80–140 per day, excluding flights.
  • A comfortable mid-range trip is more likely to cost A$170–280 per person per day.
  • Accommodation and paid entertainment are the two biggest factors that can change the budget.

Gold Coast travel budget: average daily cost

As a practical reference for 2026, a traveller can get by on around A$80–140 per day on a tight budget, while a comfortable mid-range trip is more likely to cost A$170–280 per day. Anyone looking for good hotels, frequent restaurant meals and paid activities can easily spend more than A$350 a day.

These figures are approximate, per person, and do not include international or domestic flights to the Gold Coast. Accommodation is, by far, the factor most likely to change your overall budget.

    Gold Coast accommodation prices

The coast has an enormous range of places to stay, from backpacker dorms to resorts overlooking the Pacific.

In 2026, hostel dorm beds can still be found at very low prices on certain dates, although the cheapest rates are limited and should not be treated as a guaranteed budget. For hotels, current searches show examples of roughly A$130–260 per room per night for mid-range properties, while higher-end hotels can cost significantly more.

For a more realistic budget: Backpacker: allow approximately A$35–70 per person per night. Couple sharing a hotel or apartment: around A$70–140 per person. Solo traveller wanting a private room: it is sensible to budget A$130–260 or more. Upscale hotel or resort: from around A$250 per room upwards, with virtually no upper limit.

Travelling during Australian school holidays, public holidays or major events can completely change these figures. Booking late rarely helps either.

How to save on Gold Coast accommodation

Surfers Paradise has a huge concentration of accommodation and makes it easy to get around without a car. Southport can offer interesting alternatives if price is the priority. With apartments, splitting the cost between several people can make far more sense than booking multiple hotel rooms.

The mistake is becoming fixated on staying literally on the beachfront. Being a few streets back from the beach can save a considerable amount without changing the experience very much.

Food prices on the Gold Coast

The Gold Coast is not a particularly cheap destination if you plan to eat out three times a day. Dining costs are high in Australia, and in the most touristy areas it is easy to spend far more than expected.

As a reasonable daily food budget: A$35–55 can work if you are disciplined: supermarkets, shared kitchens, simple breakfasts and the occasional casual meal.

With A$60–100 per day, you can combine cafés, casual lunches and a pleasant dinner without turning every meal into an exercise in accounting.

Above A$120 per day, you have plenty of freedom to eat breakfast out, dine at good restaurants, have drinks and choose based more on appetite than price.

A kitchen in your accommodation may be worth more than a slightly nicer room. Buying breakfast, fruit, water and the occasional dinner at the supermarket can cut costs with very little sacrifice.

Gold Coast public transport costs: a welcome budget surprise

This is where the Gold Coast works in the traveller’s favour.

Translink services in Queensland currently have a flat fare of A$0.50 per journey, including buses, trains, ferries and trams across the network; Brisbane’s Airtrain is an exception. Contactless payment can also be used on compatible services in South East Queensland.

This means that if you are travelling mainly between areas such as Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach and Southport, public transport may represent an almost insignificant part of your budget.

A car starts to make more sense if you want to explore the hinterland, visit more remote walking areas or have greater flexibility when travelling as a family. But then you need to add car rental, fuel and parking.

    Gold Coast activity prices

This is where the other side of the Gold Coast appears.

Spending a morning at Burleigh Heads, swimming, walking by the ocean or watching the sunset can literally cost nothing. But the Gold Coast is also one of Australia’s theme park capitals.

At present, one-day tickets start at approximately A$99 for Movie World and Sea World, and A$89 for Wet'n'Wild. There is also a three-day pass covering all three parks from A$149, so anyone who genuinely wants to visit several parks should compare multi-day passes before buying individual tickets. Prices and promotions can change.

Surfing, excursions, wildlife parks, cruises and other experiences can quickly add several hundred dollars to a one-week trip.

The key is deciding before you travel which activities are priorities. Improvising a paid attraction every day is one of the fastest ways to blow your budget.

Gold Coast budget for 3 days

Budget trip: A$240–420 per person. Designed for hostel accommodation, supermarket food, public transport and free beaches or walks.

You can fit in the occasional low-cost activity, but a theme park will push you towards the upper end of the budget or beyond it.

Mid-range trip: A$510–840 per person. This allows you to share a comfortable room, eat out fairly often and enjoy one or two major activities.

For a first visit without major luxuries, this is probably the most sensible balance.

Comfortable trip: A$1,050–1,800 or more. Good accommodation, frequent restaurant meals, occasional taxis, cocktails and several paid experiences.

Gold Coast budget for 5 days

A budget traveller can expect to spend approximately A$400–700.

    For a mid-range trip, allow around A$850–1,400.

With higher-end hotels, restaurants and plenty of activities, A$1,750–3,000 is a more realistic estimate.

Five days also makes it easier to get better value from accommodation and multi-day passes if theme parks are an important part of the trip.

Gold Coast budget for one week

For seven days: Budget: A$560–980 per person. Mid-range: A$1,190–1,960. Comfortable or high-end: A$2,450–4,200 or more.

For couples, sharing a room makes a major difference to the numbers. For someone travelling alone and always staying in private hotel rooms, the budget increases considerably.

How to visit the Gold Coast on a budget

The Gold Coast makes it possible to save precisely because some of its most memorable experiences are free: warm sand beneath your feet at sunrise, surfers carving lines across the Pacific, the coastal walk at Burleigh and kilometres of beaches where the city seems to stop at the water’s edge.

Make the most of that free side of the destination.

Book accommodation with a kitchen, use public transport, pay only for the attractions you genuinely care about and bundle theme parks into passes when doing so works out cheaper.

It is also worth keeping an eye on seemingly minor expenses: coffee, alcohol, snacks, food delivery and rideshare trips. Individually they seem harmless; after a week, they can add up to the cost of several nights’ accommodation.

Make the most of that free side of the destination.

Is the Gold Coast expensive? A realistic daily budget

Yes, if you compare it with budget destinations in Asia or Latin America. Not necessarily, if you compare it with other Australian city breaks and know how to take advantage of its free activities.

Accommodation and paid entertainment are the two biggest enemies of your budget. Public transport, by contrast, is exceptionally cheap at the moment.

For a balanced trip, excluding flights, A$200–250 per person per day is a comfortable starting point for planning if two people are sharing accommodation. It is possible to travel for considerably less, but you will need to cook more and be selective about activities. It is also remarkably easy to spend far more.

The Gold Coast particularly rewards travellers who understand one simple thing: you do not need to pay for something every day to enjoy it. The Surfers Paradise skyline may be spectacular, but often the real luxury lies just a few metres beyond it, where the buildings end and the Pacific begins.
