Who might be disappointed by Gold Coast?
This is where it is worth knowing what to expect before booking.
If your dream of Australia is silent, remote and almost empty, Surfers Paradise probably will not match that image.
There are apartment towers, traffic, shopping centres, attractions and plenty of tourist activity. Some areas may feel overly developed to travellers seeking untouched nature or small coastal towns.
Nor should Gold Coast be chosen purely for its beaches on the assumption that the entire experience will be intimate and peaceful. There are relaxed corners, but choosing the right place to stay matters.
And while public transport is convenient along the urban corridor, having a car can offer much more freedom if you plan to explore the hinterland and places away from the main transport connections.

It can be, but your budget depends greatly on how you travel.

When is the best time to visit Gold Coast?
Gold Coast can be visited during much of the year, but the season changes the experience considerably.
The warmer months are better suited to swimming and an entirely outdoor lifestyle, although they can also bring greater humidity and periods of rain. The milder seasons are often particularly pleasant for combining beaches and hiking.

How to make your Gold Coast trip much more worthwhile
The most common mistake is confusing Gold Coast with Surfers Paradise.
Surfers is worth seeing: it has a distinctive energy, a huge beach and an urban skyline that is hard to forget. But it should not dominate the entire trip.
There is another Gold Coast to the south, and a completely different one inland.
When you combine both, the destination gains depth.
A morning beside the Pacific. A coffee in Burleigh Heads. Roads climbing into the mountains. Vegetation becoming thicker and thicker. The distant sound of a waterfall. And then, as you return towards the coast, that almost surreal line of buildings glowing in the last light of the day.
That is when Gold Coast becomes more than simply a holiday city.

Yes, but it depends very much on what you are looking for in Australia.
It is especially worthwhile for anyone who enjoys the ocean, surfing, activities, coastal scenery and the possibility of combining city life and nature within the same trip.
It may appeal less to travellers seeking isolation, small traditional communities or a constant sense of untouched wilderness.
Its main drawback — being highly developed and touristy — is also part of its advantage: it is easy to find accommodation, entertainment and different ways to fill your days.
The key is not to stay only beneath the skyscrapers of Surfers Paradise.
Because perhaps the most interesting image of Gold Coast is not that famous line of towers beside the ocean. Perhaps it is the moment, a few hours later, when those towers have disappeared behind the mountains and all that remains ahead of you is the deep green of an Australian forest.
