Common planning pitfalls

Mistakes to avoid in Sicily: choose wisely before trying to see everything

Etna's landscape recalls the need to check conditions before arranging an excursion. Choosing wisely also means adjusting your route and expectations.

Leaving something out can help you enjoy the rest

Sicily can disappoint when a trip becomes a collection of images: a volcano, a cathedral, a cove and another town before dinner. Its diversity demands choices. Mistakes to avoid concern routes, tickets, driving and expectations for each visit. Choosing what to leave out helps you enjoy what remains, without turning the island into a race.

  • Paper regional tickets require validation; the personalised digital tickets described by Trenitalia do not require that same manual step.
  • In Palermo, paying for and activating a ZTL permit are separate steps; in Siracusa, guest access does not authorise parking.
  • Etna requires mountain preparation and condition checks; Palermo, the Egadi and Siracusa do not form one compact circuit.

Treating the whole island as a compact circuit

Regional itineraries distinguish the west, east and southeast. This provides a useful principle: group visits geographically before booking bases and activities. Palermo, the Egadi, Etna and Siracusa should not be strung together like neighbourhoods in one city.

Check complete journeys, including connections and the return trip, before accepting a combination that looks appealing on a map. For a first visit, choosing one part of the island allows deeper exploration. The same principle applies to Sicily’s residents: a getaway can focus on an unfamiliar area without expecting it to represent the entire region.

Cefalú: reducing heritage to a fleeting stop

Cefalú’s cathedral belongs to the Arab-Norman heritage ensemble shared with Palermo and Monreale. This connection helps put visits in context, but does not make the three places an immediately accessible or interchangeable itinerary.

The mistake is arriving simply to tick off a familiar image, without deciding what you want to explore. If architecture interests you, allow time for the cathedral and check visiting arrangements. If you prefer exploring the town, embrace that choice without adding interiors out of obligation. Combining both can work, provided the onward journey does not dictate your entire stay. A shared heritage listing does not guarantee identical access arrangements.

Cathedral towers and coastal houses in Cefalù beneath the Rocca
Cefalù encourages allowing time for heritage visits rather than treating each town as a fleeting stop.

Confusing paper and digital regional tickets

The format matters. Paper regional tickets require validation before travel. The personalised digital regional tickets described by Trenitalia do not require the same manual validation; their conditions and applicable identification requirements must be followed.

Do not automatically apply what you know about one format to the other. Check what you have bought before boarding and keep your ticket available for inspection.

Also distinguish a published connection from a confirmed journey. Strikes or force majeure can disrupt services. Check operator notices when a journey underpins an important booking, and avoid planning a day that only works if every connection runs as expected.

Driving in without sorting out access and parking

In Palermo, paying for a ZTL permit and activating it are separate steps. Proof of payment does not mean the process is complete. Before entering, check that you have completed the procedure applicable to your vehicle.

In Siracusa, the municipal clarification for accommodation guests distinguishes ZTL access from parking permission. Confirm with your accommodation how the current procedure applies and where you can leave your car.

The practical decision starts before driving: decide whether you need to reach your accommodation by car or can park outside the restricted area. A booking alone does not resolve both issues, and arriving before asking adds uncertainty.

Etna: expecting a volcano outing to be an urban stroll

Etna’s landscape draws your gaze into the distance; preparing an excursion requires attention to specific conditions. This is an active volcano in a mountain environment. Volcanic activity, wind and changing weather can affect what is possible.

Check conditions and restrictions for your route, prepare your equipment and use authorised guides in accordance with Civil Protection recommendations. Do not mistake a clear photograph for permission to ascend.

Decide what experience you want: approaching the volcanic landscape does not mean you can undertake any high-altitude route. If conditions prevent your chosen plan, changing it avoids expecting an experience the place cannot offer that day.

Assuming all coastal outings are equivalent

An outing near Scopello requires checking conditions and availability before giving it a fixed place in your itinerary. An appealing scene does not confirm access, services or options for your chosen date.

At Isola Bella, the pebble strip connecting it to land can be partly submerged at high tide. Do not plan on the crossing remaining dry.

The Egadi also require different choices: Favignana’s relatively flat landscape does not describe Marettimo’s hiking terrain. Choose according to your intended activity and preparation. Check sailing schedules for the relevant period, without reusing an earlier timetable or assuming your planned return is guaranteed.

Confusing an open building with a complete visit

At Catania’s Benedictine monastery, shared university spaces and the full guided tour offer different access. Entering a communal area does not mean seeing every space included in the organised visit.

In Palermo, Teatro Massimo visits depend on rehearsals and theatre productions. Decide what you want to see and confirm the available visit options before planning your day around a particular interior.

This distinction prevents two disappointments: expecting a full tour without booking, or dismissing a building because one option is unavailable. These places retain their own functions; their cultural interest coexists with uses that shape visiting arrangements.

Turning a food tradition into a guarantee

Knowing a dish helps you choose, but its traditional recipe does not certify how every establishment prepares it. Panelle are traditionally made with chickpea flour and cazzilli with potato; this does not establish every ingredient or the premises’ preparation practices.

Ask about the actual preparation if you have dietary requirements. Nor should a historic market’s presence become an automatic recommendation for every stall. Ballarò, Capo and Catania’s Pescheria provide culinary context, but each purchase calls for its own decision. Tradition guides curiosity; it does not replace information from the establishment.

Local interaction: forgetting that people still live here

San Benedetto, in Catania, maintains a cloistered religious community. Its presence reminds us that somewhere open to visitors retains boundaries and functions unrelated to tourism. Respect restrictions, rules, quiet and residential spaces; an open door is not necessarily an invitation to enter.

Greet people, ask permission before photographing them and use simple expressions such as buongiorno or grazie when appropriate. Be respectful when buying or eating, take your rubbish with you and avoid encroaching on properties or sensitive areas.

Those welcoming visitors to their own city can help by choosing meeting places that neither block access nor turn neighbours into a spectacle. Do not attribute behaviour to “Sicilians” based on an isolated experience. Travel gains depth when each place retains something beyond its role in your itinerary.
