Your first walk should begin in the Altstadt, the Old Town. Zurich works very well as a base for day trips, although not all of them are worthwhile if you have limited time. If you are only staying for two days, it may be better to remain in the city rather than turning the trip into a race.

Zurich in the rain can become grey and somewhat austere, but it does not run out of things to do. The Swiss National Museum is one of the best options for understanding the country’s history, culture and design. Kunsthaus is another safe bet, especially for those who want to devote several hours to art without feeling as though they are simply “filling” the day. Historic cafés, design shops, small galleries and the city centre’s shopping arcades also work well.

It is not, however, Europe’s most passionate or spontaneous city. Its romance is clean, serene, almost restrained. For some couples, that will be ideal; for others, it may feel too orderly.

Zurich’s nightlife is not wild, but it does exist. Zürich-West is one of the most interesting areas for going out: former industrial spaces, restaurants, bars, contemporary culture and a younger energy than the historic centre. There are also bars near the Old Town, as well as cultural plans such as concerts, opera and theatre. That said, going out at night in Zurich can be expensive, and anyone looking for an overflowing party scene may find the city too well-behaved.

Bahnhofstrasse impresses with its luxury and polished appearance, but if you are not interested in expensive shopping, it may be little more than a short stroll. It is also best not to become obsessed with seeing every museum: Zurich is more enjoyable when you combine culture, water, neighbourhoods and calm.
The most common mistake is trying to turn it into a cheap or overly intense city. It is neither. Zurich asks for a different rhythm: look at the river, step into a museum, climb a hill, have a drink without rushing and accept that part of its appeal lies precisely in what does not shout.
